Zijlstra since 1957

Zijlstra B.V. is a leading wholesaler in (occasional) furniture and lighting, based in Tiel, with over 65 years of experience in the interior industry. As a family business, now involving the third generation, Zijlstra offers a wide and contemporary range of approximately 1,000 (occasional) furniture pieces and lighting. Thanks to modern logistics, fast delivery from stock, and continuous product development, Zijlstra is a reliable partner both domestically and internationally.

Where it all began

In 1957, the company Zijlstra was founded by Sicco Zijlstra. The company was located on Latensteinseweg in Tiel. At that time, it was a metalworking production company specializing in home decorative products. The company offered a wide range of metal, tin, and brass home decoration items to retailers. Products such as ashtrays, pitchers, coasters and candle holders were produced in Tiel for many years. Even then, Zijlstra had a very broad assortment of products that were innovative and contemporary for that time.

In the 1970s, retail began to face increasing pressure. Specific home decoration stores as they existed at that time disappeared and merged into large household retail chains. As a logical consequence, the focus within Zijlstra's collection gradually shifted from home decoration to occasional furniture. This started with products such as magazine racks and coat stands, but soon expanded to items like side tables and coffee tables. Initially, these were made of wood, and over time, the furniture began to increase in size, until products like dining tables, dressers, and wall cabinets were included in the assortment. In 1989, the last accessories disappeared from Zijlstra's assortment.

The next step

In the late 1970s, glass was introduced into the Zijlstra collection. For many years, this, along with wooden items, made up the assortment. Gradually, glass began to dominate, until around 2007 when high gloss was introduced into the collection. Zijlstra was very successful with this for several years. However, by 2015, both glass and high gloss had completely disappeared from the collection, and Zijlstra began to offer the assortment we are known for today. Additionally, in the late 2000s, a significant addition to the assortment was made: lighting. The models and designs have changed significantly since then, but we still offer these items with great pleasure and success.

In 1977, Zijlstra moved from Latensteinseweg to Edisonstraat, where in 1995, Marcel Zijlstra took over the company from his father, Sicco Zijlstra. He shaped the company into what it is today. Currently, Marcel Zijlstra's children, Joy, Luuk, and Demi Zijlstra, are also working within the company.

In 2004, the logistics center on Edisonstraat was expanded with a large high-rise warehouse, increasing the area to 10,000 m². This, combined with the most modern automation, allows us to have 97% of the products in stock at all times.
